Doors: 5:30 PM 6:00 PM FRIDAY MAY 22, 2026

After the smoke cleared, there was a city to rebuild.

Why this story– and why now?

After the 9/11 attacks, once the smoke cleared and the rubble was removed, New Yorkers had a city to rebuild. There was just one problem: no one could agree on what should be built. People cried. People yelled. People fought. The only thing they didn’t do was get along. Until a single event changed everything. ADMISSION IS FREE, BUT SEATING IS LIMITED. Reservation is required.

Nature Journaling with Peach Lukens

Nature is not only worth seeing but remembering. The art of Nature Journaling has a wide range of expressions and subject matters - it can range from the flowers in your garden to the wilds of a forest. We will explore a variety of ways to keep a journal along with several mediums to illustrate and record what you want to remember.  This fun, hands-on workshop will begin in the classroom and flow out to the Center’s pollinator garden. A wide variety of mediums and techniques will be introduced: pencil, pen & ink, watercolors, colored pencil, brush markers and acrylics.

Our teacher, Peach Lukens, remembers an old home movie her father took of her bending over to smell a dandelion while learning to walk. Her love of Nature coupled with journaling, exploring and working with a wide variety of art mediums has been a passion of hers for some 70 years!

Estela Romero's Presentation at CMPASC

The Cape May Point Arts & Science Center is proud to host Estela Romero for a presentation on Monarch conservation.  Estela is an environmental educator from Mexico.  She is a lifelong resident of the Mexican Monarch Reserve, where for years she has been active in monarch conservation.  She has been engaged in environmental education in the schools within the Reserve, and also coordinates with environmental educators in the US and Canada through the Symbolic Monarch Migration and Journey North programs.  Her talk, titled, “The Magnificent Migration of Monarchs,” will mix scientific facts with personal and historical anecdotes.  She is coming at the invitation of monarch enthusiasts who met her in Mexico and felt that she needed to experience the migration of monarchs through Cape May.

A Monarch tagging demonstration will take place at 2:00 PM. Estela’s presentation will begin at 3:00 PM. This event is free and open to the general public. Donations are highly encouraged and appreciated.

Budding Young Naturalists with Peach Lukens

Peach Lukens has loved the beauty and solitude of Nature since she could hold a crayon. Now, 7 decades later, she’s even more passionate! A graduate of Stockton University in Environmental Science, and once a homeschooling mother and Montessori educator, she continues to fill her life with art, grandchildren, students, and all the wonders of living on a secluded farm in Cape May.

This workshop is for the young explorer who loves nature and the art that goes with it. Participants will dabble in a wide range of mediums while examining sea critters, trees, flowers, birds and bugs while working in pen & ink, watercolors, brush pens and colored pencils. Students will also consider the ways in which to keep a nature journal.

All supplies provided including a fruit snack break. We’ll probably draw that too!

Ages 13-17
